I agree virtual events will never replace face to face (in only rare circumstances do I see that as their role) and that is the way to close business. I also think different markets use events in a different ways. However, if I was to generalise, I would say that most exhibitions are a showcase of vendor talent which a potential buyer uses to initially engage with potential suppliers. If you can take that initial vetting online you can save time, travel and effort.
On the other hand, if we consider a far shorter decision making process where the exhibition provides an opportunity to meet and engage to such a degree that a decision can be made with all the informantion required, I would agree with you that physical exhibitions can be the surprising green alternative! I'm just guessing (as you say nobody knows for sure) that the role of a virtual event as a filtering mechaism (and enhancement of the physical offering) is an important and valuable tool.
Hi Greg, a good blog and very interesting work on the numbers. However, I must take issue with the statement 'more online contacts means more travel'. Surely the reason a visitor to an online event attends is to souce information/opinion and/or 'audition' potential suppliers. By effectively filtering potential suppliers online there is, therefore, a reduced number of business trips required as the customer only needs to engage with a few 'serious' contenders rather than a list of companies thrown up by a Google search.
