Learning Zombies: The Adventure Begins in May

Greetings Visitor.

The first people to discover the ImagiLearning Highlands and Lowlands were overwhelmed by the beauty and profound mystical experience of the islands. They were also overwhelmed by the emptiness...the almost complete absence of residents. What was apparently once a thriving and majestic home of wisdom and learning, was now the home of  individuals who did not, or could not learn. Learning Zombies.
...
They sit in classrooms and training rooms all over the islands, but they do not learn. They sit, they stare, they sometimes nod their heads as if they are listening and learning...but they are not learning. There is no breath of learning in them at all.
Where have the learners gone? Did something happen to cause them to leave the islands? Were they removed by force, or even worse, were they sacrificed to satisfy some unjust passion? Or perhaps, even more disturbing, are those ancient learners still here...but somehow gruesomely transformed into these empty shells we now see sitting in this classroom?
...
And what was once only a mystery linked to these two magical islands, has now become the talk of every village in the land. For there too, learners are disappearing, being replaced by the same Zombies. While instructors and institutions continue to "teach" in the ways they have known for decades and centuries, most of those instructors now face empty eyes and hearts, unable to connect with the minds of the Zombies in their charge.
...
What is happening to the learners of the land?
...
There are Rumors...
...

Rumors of a dark force that, not quickly, but very slowly drained the life out of the learners of the Highlands and Lowlands, and has now begun doing the same in the other lands. This force works so slowly and quietly that no one notices their presence until all hope is lost, and once powerful learners have been replaced by the emotionless Zombie learner.
...
Even more disturbing is the Rumor that the Dark Force's greatest strength is that it works it's fiendish magic through the very instructors and institutions who are responsible for seeing that learning occurs. Without their knowledge, and against their strongest assertions, those very instructors and institutions carry out the plans of the Dark Force...ever so slowly transforming their learners, into Zombies.
...
This is the challenge of Rumors... the activities and programs taking place in the land of the islands of ImagiLearning. To uncover the powers of the Dark Forces, and to create the weapons that can defeat the Dark Force and trance-form learners by breathing new life into the Zombies now sitting in classrooms throughout the land. It is a quest to shine light upon those practices used by the Dark Force, and to help those who have been entranced by their long-held powers, to overcome those powers with new practices...breaking the long-held trance cast upon them by the Dark Force.
...
This is our mission. This is our cause. Join us if you have the heart to do so.

"Defining Virtual": A 3 Hour Introduction To Virtual Environments For Learning And Training

While virtual environments are a hot topic for events, learning and training, the lack of clear defining just what a "virtual environment" is, leads to confusion, and in some cases, some disappointing (and very expensive) results. After 6 years of serious work in the "virtual world" ImagiLearning's John Jamison is offering "Defining Virtual", a 3 hour learning activity that is designed to answer your questions, define the options, and clarify the paths to successful move…

This Virtual Stuff Could Drive Me Crazy !!

What IS it about virtual environments?

What can they really offer learning, training and business that makes the effort worthwhile?

How do I decide which virtual platform is "right" for me?

How do I sell the idea to my leadership?

How do I sell the idea to IT?

How do I introduce new people to the environment when they come in?

Just what the heck is the 'real' deal on 'virtual', anyway?

THOSE are the questions we… Continue

Did You Feel That? The Avatar Just Evolved

One of the questions following our presentation at the Summit was about the technical ability to control a virtual avatar through something other than a mouse or buttons. I mentioned that there was some work being done using the Wii controllers, but expected to see much more happen now that Microsoft had released the Kinect motion-sensing technology on their gaming systems.

Gee, it's fun to be right once in a while...take a look at this:…

Virtual, Immersive, Engagement, Oh My: A First Step to Understanding

Attending the 2011 Virtual Edge Summit reminded me of conferences I attended in my field of education and training about 5 years ago. That is when we were first seriously exploring the potential of the ideas of "virtual", and "3D" as tools to enhance learning and training. Last week, if I only closed my eyes and replaced the term "event" with "courses", I was having that same experience all over again.

The past 5 years have given those of us in eduction and training the…
