Media Calling The End of Second Life--except for education and meetings

Valleywag on Gawker.com called it the "Death of Second Life" saying "the most overhyped virtual world, has been abandoned even by its most fervent journalistic promoters, like Reuters and Wired. It's now pitching itself as an online schoolhouse."

There are still many large companies using Second Life including Intel, Cisco, Microsoft and Sun, and Dan Parks of the Virtualis Convention Center on Second Life says he is busier than ever with corporate and association meetings and conferences. CNN uses its Second Life island to hold meetings with volunteer reporters.

Having experienced what Dan is doing on SL, I think there is a lot of potential for the meeting industry but I guess we won't have the hype but I hope there isn't a degradation of service and development.

Spoke to Dan after the story ran and he said he is "thrilled" and hopes this shakes out all of the bad elements that do inhabit Second Life. His environment on second life is secluded and no one gets off his convention center property unless they do so intentionally. He thinks Linden Labs is moving toward the business and academic marketplace.
